Programme:

Day 1: Arrival in Sierre, dinner and walkthrough of the week.

Day 2: Crête du Midi - Cabane de Moiry, 28K, 1850vm+ / 1300vm-.

After breakfast, we drop off our luggage at the station; we won't see it again until Zermatt. We take the bus to Chalais and take the lift up to Crête du Midi where we start this adventure. The first day is immediately the longest when we go deep into the valleys of Valais. Via Bec des Bossons, we traverse to the dam at Lac de Moiry and climb the final stretch up to Cabane de Moiry. There we spend the night at 2,800m altitude close to the glaciers.

Day 3: Cabane de Moiry - Zinal. 23K, 850hm+ / 2000hm-.

We have the option of climbing to Pigne de la Lé (3,396m) in the dark to see the sun rise, descending back to the hut and having breakfast or 'just' starting after breakfast. First we descent over the glacial moraine towards the reservoir and stay at altitude to arrive in the valley of Zinal after a final climb. We are left with a magnificent traverse deep into the valley before descending to Zinal where we spend the night in a hotel.

Day 4: Zinal - Turtmannhütte, 28K, 1800hm+ / 950hm-.

We start the day with a climb through the forest and traverse to Col de la Florcletta at 2875m, today's highest point. After the col we run down, with new views at every corner, before making the final climb to the Turtmannhütte at 2,500m. A small, cosy hut with good food. The rösti or homemade cake will taste good after this day and with views of the glaciers.

Day 5: Turtmannhütte - Randa. 21K  1600hm+ / 2700hm-.

We have an early breakfast at the hut to start the climb to the Barrhorn (3,610m), this week's highest point, in good time. As we climb, the sun slowly rises and once at the top we enjoy the stunning views of the surreal landscape unfolding in the morning sun. We descend to the Schollijoch, this week's crux. Here we have to climb down via ladders, ropes and steel braces until we reach the glacier. This is flat and without crevasses, so it is safe to run across. We stop at the Topalihütte for homemade pastries and coffee before starting the long descent to Randa, where we spend the night at the hotel or left with a climb towards the Europahütte.

Day 6; Randa - Mountainlodge Ze Seewjinu. 25K 1900hm+ / 1000hm-.

After breakfast, we climb straight to the Charles Kuonen suspension bridge, at 494m the longest in the world. After this we run along the Europaweg, high above the Matter Valley, one of the most beautiful routes in Europe. Finally, the Matterhorn comes into view, towering high above Zermatt. On the way, we eat at the Täschalp and before settling down at the mountain lodge, we take a dip in the lake nearby. The Mountainlodge is fully equipped, offers a delicious dinner and extensive breakfast. The home-made schnapps made from pine cones is also recommended.

Day 7: Mountainlodge Ze Seewjinu - Zermatt. 26K 1200hm+ / 1900hm-

This will be a beautiful last day. The king stage around Zermatt along the Matterhorn below. We take it easy and fully enjoy the views. Along the way we take advantage of the huts to eat and drink. We take the last break at the Triffthütte before starting the final descent to Zermatt. This one has a lot of elevation gain, but before you know it you are suddenly running through the streets of Zermatt, what a contrast! After a well-deserved beer we head to the hotel; time to rest and enjoy the pool and wellness facilities.
